Industrial drug research in seven nations: key findings of a recent OHE/MPS study on the drug industry in seven OECD-countries
Drugs Made in Germany 1985 Oct-Dec; 25:153-158, 160
Abstract:
With data drawn from the report “Pharmaceuticals in 7 nations,’ the state of pharmaceutical investment in research and development (R&D) by 7 nations: Federal Republic of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Switzerland and the United States, is discussed. The data show the overall pattern of decline in new chemical entity introductions has been common to the majority of the 7 nations; Italy is the exception. The U.S. accounted for more than slightly half of the total introductions onto the world market between 1958 and 1970. In broad terms, there appears to be a relationship between levels of spending on R&D and new chemical entity development. The poor performance of the Italian and French drug industries seems to be the result of price controls, segmentation of the market by restrictions on prescribing, erosion of brand names, and the absence of effective patent protection.
