Abstract:

A history of expiration dating regulations for pharmaceutical manufacturers, the rationales for and against including expiration dates on prescription drug containers issued to patients, a list of states requiring such labeling and American Pharmaceutical Association policy on the subject were presented. The toxic effects of certain drugs after expiration were also summarized.
