Lord R.
Reye's syndrome and aspirin-industry's position
Australian Journal of Pharmacy 1986 May; 67:518, 520, 522

Abstract:

Steps Australian industry has taken to balance regulatory pressure relating to the possible association between the use of aspirin and the onset of Reye’s syndrome in children are presented. The incidence of Reye’s syndrome in Australia seems to be much lower than in the United States. If the industry is convinced that the incidence of Reye’s syndrome is equal to or greater than that in the United States, industry stands ready to amend its policy to take account of any new scientific evidence. This could mean changes in labeling, in the way aspirin is marketed, even in retail outlets. The industry is spending a lot of money on campaigns to educate the community to use drugs properly. It does not want to see useful products taken back to prescription only or pharmacy only access.
