DEVELOPMENT OF A STUDENT/PHARMACIST SPEAKERS BUREAU
ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 1988 Dec; 23:

Abstract:

In order to address Parent Teacher Associations and Senior Citizen Centers, the Student Chapter of Pharmacists Against Drug Abuse at UCSF has established a speakers bureau/mentorship program in conjunction with local pharmacy organizations. Pharmacist participation was solicited by direct proposals to the Board of Directors of several pharmacy organizations and through subsequent advertising in organizational news letters. Student coordinators are responsible for contacting community organizations and obtaining speaking engagements. At least one pharmacist and one student are assigned to each lecture; the pharmacist assumes a mentoring role so the degree of the pharmacist’s responsibility depends on the student’s background and level of speaking skill. Resource materials are provided to speakers which focus on parental concerns about drug abuse. This includes signs, symptoms, and the basic pharmacology of illicit drug use. Senior Center lectures focus on the proper use of over the counter and prescription medications. At this writing, six lectures have been given. Written evaluations from these community groups show a positive response. We anticipate providing seventy lectures through Spring, 1989, while continuing to evaluate the speakers bureau. This program provides a valuable community service, gives students and pharmacists an opportunity to develop skills in public speaking, encourages interaction between practicing pharmacists and students, and promotes the image of pharmacist as educator.
