Abstract:

Control of drug benefits and pharmaceutical services by health maintenance organizations and other managed care organizations is discussed. The development of limited choice formularies within a therapeutic category and their effects on physician prescribing are described. Some major pharmaceutical companies are supplying cost-benefit studies for use and evaluation by formulary committee members and are engaging in jointly conducted and sponsored drug studies. Widespread use of computers makes it possible for managed care organizations to monitor abuse, fraud, and quality assurance of the drug use process and to do statistical analysis, and thereby identify outliers or exceptions from the norm.
