Schamberg IL.
The quality and cost of prescription drugs.
J Am Pharm Assoc 1974 May; 14:(5):241-3

Abstract:

Among the factors which contribute to the high costs of prescription drugs are the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association’s and the American Medical Association’s general consensus against the generics, state antisubstitution laws, and laws proscribing advertising and posting of retail prices by pharmacies. Assurance of high quality of prescription drugs lies primarily in the hands of the USP, the NF, and the FDA. The FDA should require testing of all drugs for bioavailability and demand that all proposed new drugs present evidence of superiority in efficacy or safety over drugs already on the market; the USP and NF should continue to develop and refine evaluative methods.
