Abstract:

New U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines regarding direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drug products are summarized, and the potential impact of these guidelines on rational drug therapy and health care costs is discussed. It is emphasized that these guidelines do not address the need for patient education and the role of the pharmacist in providing information that is comprehensible to consumers. An American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) policy regarding the educational role that direct-to-consumer advertising could fulfill is also briefly discussed.
