Abstract:

A historical perspective of legislative and regulatory initiatives in the United States pertaining to OTC medications is presented, including the safety and efficacy of OTC drugs, the switching of prescription drugs to OTC status, and the labeling of OTC drugs; some challenges facing the OTC drug industry are considered. A table listing drugs switched from prescription drug to OTC status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1975 is included.
