The Multicenter Isradipine Diuretic Atherosclerosis Study (MIDAS)
JAMA 1997 Jan 22-29; 277:(4):297

Abstract:

The undersigned authors participated in the conduct of MIDAS. For the record, we feel it important to state publicly why we dropped out of the investigative group while the final paper was under preparation. At the point of our departure, we believed that the sponsor of the study was attempting to wield undue influence on the nature of the final paper. This effort was so oppressive that we felt it inhibited academic freedom and led to substantial differences within the MIDAS group with regard to the ultimate presentation and interpretation of the results. Fortunately, the published article is very near to the paper we would have written had we remained part of the investigative group. We congratulate the authors on the final product and wish to express our respect for the peer review process that helped lead to an improved publication. [full text]

...to influence multinational corporations effectively, the efforts of governments will have to be complemented by others, notably the many voluntary organisations that have shown they can effectively represent society’s public-health interests…
A small group known as Healthy Skepticism; formerly the Medical Lobby for Appropriate Marketing) has consistently and insistently drawn the attention of producers to promotional malpractice, calling for (and often securing) correction. These organisations [Healthy Skepticism, Médecins Sans Frontières and Health Action International] are small, but they are capable; they bear malice towards no one, and they are inscrutably honest. If industry is indeed persuaded to face up to its social responsibilities in the coming years it may well be because of these associations and others like them.
