Ethical responsibilities of physicians in their dealings with pharmaceutical companies
Annals of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada 1990; 23:45-48

Abstract:

In light of increased public demand for ethical behaviour in business, politics and the professions, physicians are challenged to maintain their leadership role in professional ethics as new developments arise in their relationships with patients, other health professionals, and society in general. One emerging problem area that deserves the attention of physicians is their interaction with pharmaceutical companies. The ethical dimensions of this interaction have been noted in several recent articles. The time may be ripe for the development of guidelines that will define the responsibilities of Canadian physicians in this matter. In this discussion paper, the Biomedical Ethics Committee of the Royal College examines this issue and offers suggestions for its resolution.

...to influence multinational corporations effectively, the efforts of governments will have to be complemented by others, notably the many voluntary organisations that have shown they can effectively represent society’s public-health interests…
A small group known as Healthy Skepticism; formerly the Medical Lobby for Appropriate Marketing) has consistently and insistently drawn the attention of producers to promotional malpractice, calling for (and often securing) correction. These organisations [Healthy Skepticism, Médecins Sans Frontières and Health Action International] are small, but they are capable; they bear malice towards no one, and they are inscrutably honest. If industry is indeed persuaded to face up to its social responsibilities in the coming years it may well be because of these associations and others like them.
