Abstract:

This paper was prepared for the Professional Standards and Practice Council, then approved by the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 1986. The pharmaceutical industry and physicians coexist in a state of dynamic tension created by their mutual involvement in the business of treating patients. This close intertwining of interests and livelihoods is bound to result in genuine misunderstandings and legitimate conflicts of interest. This guidelines paper is an attempt to delineate and further promote an ethical and constructive relationship between psychiatrists and industry for the ultimate benefit of the patients we serve. The components of the dilemma are: advertising and critical thinking, financial sponsorship, contributions to health care, pharmaceutical research pressures, and contact points. The CPA makes fourteen recommendations about ethical responsibility, the ethics of prescribing, pharmaceutical information sources, the ethics of advertising, sponsorship of Continuing Medical Education activities, and research activity.
