Australia has a high standard of ethical conduct in the provision of health services. To ensure this is maintained, the new NHMRC Council has today agreed to develop a set of principles for the management of conflict of financial and other interest for health practitioners.
CEO of NHMRC, Warwick Anderson, said that the draft principles would be considered at the next National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in December.
“NHMRC is dedicated to upholding the highest standards for the provision of health care, the ethical conduct of research, and scientific excellence,” he said.
“Patients and the wider Australian community must have confidence that the health care we receive is based on the best available evidence and is without fear or favour.”
“The professional collaborations between government, academia, health practitioners and industry frequently have beneficial results and such collaboration should be transparent and must not compromise objectivity.”
The principles NHMRC will develop will guide health practitioners in their collaborations and partnerships with industry.
