Pharma Phacts News

Pharma Phacts goes international!

At the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA’s) annual August Meeting in Montreal, Pharma Phacts representatives met with students representing similar organisations from other countries around the world. Norway, USA, Spain, UK, New Zealand, France, Canada and Australia were all represented. These groups are all running similar awareness campaigns to Pharma Phacts among students in their respective countries.

It was agreed that as we all have similar purposes – and are all member countries of the IFMSA – it would be good if we could share ideas and resources (where language allows!) The working group is called Pharma Facts (but we came up with the name first!) and we are currently working on an IFMSA campaign and a resource pool.

New Zealand is keen to join our Australian Pharma Phacts campaign as a branch. New Zealand medical students and doctors face slightly different issues to Australian students with respect to Pharma issues because direct-to-consumer advertising remains legal there. There is a note from Phillip from NZ below.

In the meantime, if you want to check out what some of our other international friends are up to (and not just our Frunds in the Frudge), check out their websites below:

Message from Phillip Chao (NZ):

“I was first introduced to the Pharma awareness movement at the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrist New Zealand Conference 2009. This conference featured a novel concept of an “Evidence Alley” coordinated by conference programme coordinator Associate Professor David Menkes. This Evidence Alley, including a stand from Healthy Skepticism, provided a counterpoint to the pharmaceutical sponsors of the conference.

Since then I have been interested in increasing Pharma awareness amongst New Zealand medical students. With the support of the New Zealand Medical Students’ Associatoin (NZMSA), who does not accept pharmaceutical sponsorship, I am currently developing policy guidelines for student organisations. Pharma Phacts New Zealand will be another avenue to strengthen the movement in New Zealand. I would love to hear from interested NZ medical students, email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).”
