Brogle RC.
Effect of the OTC review on the future of proprietary drug research
Drug Information Journal 1973 Jul-Dec; 7:71-74

Abstract:

The probable effects of the Food and Drug Administration’s over-the-counter reviewing process on research within the drug industry are outlined, and the differences between prescription and proprietary medications are discussed. Manufacturers are urged to continue innovative research rather than use the FDA monographs as safe guidelines for their product formulations. Improved clinical methodology is predicted, as are more combinations of drugs to enhance efficacy through synergism, and possible molecular manipulation to develop new chemical entities. New claims for established products with proven safety records are also forecast.
