Stephenson PS, Walker GA.
Psychotropic drugs and women
Bioethics Quarterly 1980; 2:(1):20-38

Abstract:

(Limited to parts of article dealing with promotion.) The portrayal of women, both in the picture and captions of journal advertisements, makes it obvious that drug advertising plays a major role in reinforcing stereotypes and encouraging the administration of drugs to women. Some advertisements appear to encourage drugging a person for the benefits of others. Medical journals rely on funds from advertising and do little or nothing to expose or change these practices.
