Greenberg BG.
Avoiding conflicts of interest in drug research.
N Engl J Med 1979 Nov 1; 301:(18):1008

Abstract:

Whatever the source of funding for medical research there is a potential for conflict of interest. The important thing is that there must be complete freedom to pursue the research independent of the funding source and to publish the results. If journal editors are going to discuss potential conflicting sources of funding in editorial commentaries then who will police the policemen? The author has appeared on behalf of drug companies and has received funding from them that carried no restrictions.
