A critical look at the drug industry: how profits distort medicine
1976; 31
Abstract:
There is approximately 1 detailer for every 10 doctors in the United States. At an average cost of $25000 per detailer per year these people cost $600 million per year. In 1973, advertising revenue in its journals represented 26% of the total income of the American Medical Association. In 1972, the AMA dissolved its Council on Drugs because the council recommended stating in a publication that some of the most profitable drugs on the market were “irrational†and “not recommended.†The publication was printed without these statements.
