The quality of drug advertisements in two Finnish medical journals. A comparison between psychotropic and other drug advertisements
Soc Sci Med. 1973 Jan 01; 7:(1):51-9
Abstract:
The advertisements of the psychotropic drugs of two Finnish medical journals in the years 1959, 1965, 1971 were studied and compared to other drug advertisements by means of content analysis. Appealing to emotional factors ws more common in the group of the psychotropics. The indications had been broadened to the nonmedical field, the therapeutic manipulation had increased and the appeals of the text and picture had changed during the years studied differentiating the psychotropics from the controls. A connection between the means of advertising and the increase of drug use is proposed.
