Advertising: informative but not educational.
N Engl J Med 1972 Jun 15; 286:(24):1318-9

Abstract:

Pharmaceutical advertising is informational but never educational. Advertisements shold be overtly recognized for what they are-an unabashed attempt to get someone to buy something, although some useful information may be provided in the process. The FDA and its practices solidify the illusion that pharmaceutical advertising is educational.
